The first of many
Today, I decided to commit to something a little different with this blog. In addition to writing the occasional longer post about whatever interests me, I’m going to try to post at least one photo daily, from my iPhone. Here goes. Right now I’m riding the F Dash down to USC to co-host with Melissa. Should be fun!
I think it’s clear…
…what John McCain is planning on doing now. His “suspension” of his campaign (suspension is in quotation marks because it is apparent that advertisements are still running, and both surrogates and his ground operation are not relenting) is part of a big political show of bipartisan credentials. If he is able to spin his unnecessarily dramatic act as returning to Washington to broker a deal between reluctant Republicans and Democrats, he may be able to salvage his flagging campaign.
Let’s be clear: McCain didn’t need to go through the razzmatazz of purporting to shut down his entire presidential campaign to provide input to the deal that’s being hammered out. Barack Obama was in Washington today, and Chris Dodd speaking on Rachel Maddow’s show indicated that Obama had been part of the discussion on the bill. McCain’s move is just the political equivalent of those sign-wavers you see on street corners. It has been criticized by Obama and others as indicating that he doesn’t know how to multitask or cope with multiple crises on the go at once. I’m sure he’s hoping that the message that independents and swing voters will take away is that he’s able to broker peace between warring political factions, no matter how miniscule his actual role in the resolution of the issue is.
By the way, reporting on this is extremely confusing right now. CNN’s headline on the progress of the deal right now is “Bailout deal? Not so fast.” BBC World News has “US Congress ‘agrees bail-out deal’.” The markets are up too. Poor BBC… I’m more inclined to trust CNN on this one.
